Topical drug delivery is one of the sought after routes of drug delivery for the numerous advantages it offers. The potential of several novel drug delivery carriers for topical delivery has been established through decades of research. Fullerene, an allotrope of carbon, is a bulky molecule with 60 carbon atoms. This distinctive class of polyhedral carbon structure has been studied extensively for its distinctive material properties and potential technological applications. Fullerene’s unique carbon cage structure has tremendous scope for derivatization which makes them potential therapeutic agents. This paper discusses medically relevant applications of fullerenes, with main focus on their dermatological use.
